My older Chinese Malaysian relatives are racist against "mainland Chinese" people. Is this common in Malaysia?

They're also racist against just about everyone except their own group (Chinese Malaysians). Is it because of the influence of British colonialism (a racist regime)? My relatives went to English schools.
