Brother 6000i Sewing Machine- Making Zig Zag stitches?

You should have exactly the same stitches on both sides of the fabric. I would re-thread the machine both the top and the bobbin then try a test on scrap fabric. If that does not solve your problem, check in the manual and see if you can manually change the tension.
